ANGLICAN CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION
aka
THE FAMILY CHURCH ON OPEBI HILL
is a Parish in the Ikeja Archdeaconry of the
Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). The Parish was established
in 1983. It started as a Family Fellowship Centre with about five
(5) families living in the Opebi environs coming together to pray
and study the Bible.
Led by the Spirit, these families decided to
found an Anglican Church in their Opebi vicinity. In approval,
God, in His faithfulness, provided the site (land). They approached
the Lord Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos, The Right Revd F. O.
S e g u n, who quickly assented to the acquisition of the land
while appointing a church, All Saints Church, Yaba, to nurture
the young baby. The five families contributed money to clear the
land, hire seats and canopies to set up a “tent church”.
And on August 21, 1983, the 12th Sunday after Trinity, the inaugural
service was held on the site under canopies. Shortly afterwards,
the Bishop wrote to say, “The Church shall be christened
ANGLICAN CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION because it is on a hill.”
That was the birth of The Family Church on Opebi Hill.
The first Holy Communion Service was held on
October 30, 1983. On January 21, 1984, the Lord Bishop of Lagos,
The Right Revd F. O. Segun performed the ceremony of the Turning
of the First Sod at an open air service on the grounds of the
church. The first Vestry Meeting was held on March 8, 1984 while
the first Baptism took place on April 14, 1984.
That was the humble beginning of the ANGLICAN
CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION, OPEBI. We started as a Fellowship Centre,
grew into a “tent Church” and have now developed into
a full congregation with about Two Thousand registered members,
who now call the church “Cathedral of the Future.”
